You have learned about the encounter between the Spanish and Meso-Americans of the Western Hemisphere. Just as the Spanish and other European kingdoms were exploring the New World, European ships were exploring the coast of Africa as well. This Case Study deals with the results of encounters between Europeans and Africans, encounters which reulted in one the greatest tragedies in world history: the Slave Trade.

In order to fully understand this clash of cultures, it is necessary to gain an understanding of the cultures of both Europe and Africa at the time of the first encounters between these two civilizations. Therefore, you will begin your reading with a chapter concerning the kingdoms of Africa.
