Ancient Rome
Rome began as a small city-state, and ended up ruling the entire Mediterrean world. Rome's 1,000 year history had many accomplishments and many lasting effects - art, engineering, rule of law - but probably none more important than the spread of knowledge and ideas from other civilizations - Greece, Egypt, the Fertile Crescent - to Europe, and beyond.
